August 2002
The Karl Rove Machine began leaking "Iraq" as raw meat to the predatory press -- who will fall for anything if it means ratings, by the way. Bush, vacationing at the Crawford Ranch while pretending he wasn't thinking about Saddam Hussein, let the media become the peoples' mouthpiece. [The GOP wanted war. The Democrats who didn't were too timid to dissent. By late October, the only Democrat to practice his conscience was Sen. Paul Wellstone.]
In September, when Andrew Card was asked why Iraq hadn't been put on the table sooner said, "Because you don't introduce new products in August. You introduce them in September."
I can only conclude, based on Card's remark, that an Iraq war is Bush's remedy for correction of his wreckless mismanagement of the U.S. economy (the tech bubble burst at the end of Clinton's two terms cannot be blamed solely on the Democrats) rather than a defense of the people against terrorism. Bush has spent the U.S.'s surplus and now has us in debt. This took less than two years. Again, September 11th cannot be blamed. Bush simply took the money and allotted it to the upper strata of American society. The $300 "rebate" single people such as myself received went to the light bill and the gas bill. Or, as Al Gore said during Campaign 2000, you get one extra Diet Pepsi every week and a half.
After August 2002, issues that matter to the American people disappeared off the human radar:
- An affordable prescription drug plan for seniors;
- Affordable health care and medical insurance for the 41.5 million Americans who have nothing. Most of them are employed.
- The economy (not that Bush's wreckless tax cut for the upper 1% of the population helped drain the surplus, right?);
- Women's rights -- Bush is hellbent on appointing right wing activist judges who will assist him in finding a case that will eventuate in an overtuning of Roe v. Wade;
- Real corporate Reform -- Harvey Pitt, head of the SEC is "the fox guarding the hen house";
11-2-02
"SEC chief losing White House favor Sources: Pitt may be forced out as new search begins"
"White House support for SEC Chairman Harvey L. Pitt was deteriorating, Republican sources said."
"WHITE HOUSE officials were said to be exasperated that Pitt’s handling of the appointments had created a political crisis for President Bush days before midterm elections that could determine which party controls Congress. These sources said the White House is considering asking Pitt to step down, or allowing him to resign, after the elections." MSNBC
[We can thank Harvey Pitt for something, anyway.]
Jobs! The unemployment rate has risen to 5.7% according to today's Washington Post. September 11th is not the sole cause of this. Layoffs are continuing in the thousands. Some are because of Enron, WorldCom, Adelphia, and now, perhaps, Martha Stewart. “FOR EIGHT YEARS, we had jobs. Now we get a tax-cut check, but the economy is sinking," . . . “It seems like the Republicans get back in office, and out come the limousines" MSNBC;
U.S. economic growth is close to stalling
"Earlier this week, consumer confidence plunged to its lowest level in nine years..."
"The Labor Department said the nation's unemployment rate ticked up to 5.7 percent last month while the total number of payroll jobs fell by 5,000. That follows a 13,000 drop in September. The total number of hours worked also fell, and the number of people looking for work but unable to find it rose by more than 100,000, to 8.1 million." Wash Post
Raising the minimum wage. Bush still thinks that paying the poor slightly more for hauling his trash will destroy the U.S.'s economy. [Bad for bidness when bidness has to behave humanely];
The environment -- global warming, which Bush thinks is "fuzzy science" is fuzzily revealing extinction of species and the break-up of the ice shelf in Antarctica;
Toxic spills and the ruination of Americas streams and lakes by renigade, deregulated corporations. This is one of Bush's favorites. His environmental philosophy is akin to that of James Watts': "Might as well use it all up now. We'll be dead someday anyway;" and
The lower income levels in America will pay higher taxes to clean up the toxic waste dumped by corporations such as Monsanto, et al., into our streams and lakes.
The Race for the Senate CNN
Arkansas: Close race for Tim Hutchinson
Colorado: Same Old Crap
Georgia: GOP Hopes to Win
Iowa: Harkin in Close Race
Minnesota: Mondale in for Wellstone
Missouri: Tight for Jean Carnahan. One of the tightest in USA
New Hampshire: Sununu (R) v. Shaheen (D). If Shaheen loses, it may mean Dems lose control of Senate!
North Carolina: Liddy Dole vs. Bowles
South Carolina: Strom Thurmond gets embalmed Lindsey Graham and Alex Sanders contend for the seat
South Dakota: Daschle's home state Bush v. Daschle? Who wins the Senate seat -- Thune (R) vs. Johnson (D)?
|
And that was just for openers.
What if the Democrat voters don't turn out on November 5?
That means Bush will control all three branches of government: The executive, legislative and judicial. That means there will be NO CHECKS AND BALANCES upon the extreme Right Wing cult that has taken over Washington, D.C.
It means that 30 years of struggle for civil rights, gender equality, economic equality, environmental concerns, and much more will be sacrificed upon the alter of Armegeddon Theology as a substitute for real domestic and foreign policy.
Unless we plan to be "raptured" to heaven while watching Paul and Jan on "Praise the Lord," or Pat Robertson bloviating on "The 700 Club," we might be "left behind" watching "Spongebob" or "Law & Order."
No matter now you look at it, though, the prognosis is dismal.
Two more years of warmongering and bible banging.
I suggest we gas up the Mayflower and sail it back.

It's going to suck
Conventional wisdom has it that the Republicans will maintain the house, the Democrats will keep the Senate by a very slim margin, and JEB Bush will beat Bill McBride in Florida's hotly contested governor's race.
|
This sounds about right. The election 2002 charts I've been studying pretty much mirror today's election poll results and the prognostications of Cable TV bloviators.
With JEB neatly ensconced in Florida as the first Republican to win a second term as Governor and the first "Bush" to be re-elected to anything, it would be wise to think about a couple of things before writing me any hate mail.
First, if the Democrats in Florida do NOT get out and vote, we've got problems. Second, if the voting machines screw up and JEB is declared winner, then it will look like Election 2000 all over again. Third, if the JEB Machine has the cops out to rebust the black voters, we lose votes. Fourth, if voters are frightened by computerized voting machines, we lose votes. Fifth, if the voting machines are screwed up and McBride WINS, GOP lawyers, thugs and operatives, already holed up in Mickey Mouse's summer digs will drag McBride through the mud and run every litigious maneuver possible to see if they can overturn his win.
The same GOP lawyers, thugs and operatives are already on the ground in Minnesota, too. Good Luck, Fritz Mondale.
The GOP tries derailing the Dems
Republicans, in an effort to derail New Jersey's Frank Lautenberg and Minnesota's Fritz Mondale, are engaging in ageism (both men are 74 years old) and liberal bashing. [They're saving racism for Florida.] Not very original, but the Republicans haven't updated their propaganda manual since Goebbels first wrote it for Hitler back in 1939. I know you think I'm kidding, but the evidence for it will have to be the subject of another article. Perhaps we will look at that issue in concert with the Nazi Party's Uranus Return in 2003.
That being said, GOP Ronald Reagan was 74 when he ran for president. Strom Thurmond (b, Dec 5, 1902, Edgefield, SC) Republican Senator from South Carolina, will shortly be 100 years old. Strom has probably already been dead for at least 20 years. I think he's being maintained under a coat of wax the same way Lenin is -- he's still lying in state inside a glass box at the Kremlin. Trent Lott probably activates Strom by using a control panel specially wired to his Senate seat.
Paul Wellstone
How about the GOP's (and Independent Governor of Minnesota Jesse Ventura's) outrage, I mean outrage at the Democrats' "effrontery" at apportioning a part of Sen. Paul Wellstone's memorial for a political rally?
I bet you if the tables had been turned and it were Trent Lott who'd lost his life, we'd never hear the end of it. If one Democrat dared to utter dismay or criticism at the GOP for not inviting Al Gore (the Wellstone children did not want Veep Cheney to attend Senator Wellstone's Memorial), for example, the attacks upon Democrats would be endless. And no, I do not want harm to come to Trent Lott.
This is the party that named its members "compassionate conservatives."
What happened, really, is that the GOP, unnerved by the fervor of 20,000 Democrats in a participation mystique with Wellstone's principled spirit, was outside Karl Rove's control. It caused them blind terror. True believers, such as the GOP Right Wing (the faction that usurped the "original" GOP), are frightened people who may exhibit unstable ego formation. Life must be defined within a tight black and white system. Anything more fluid is experienced as far too anxiety provoking. Thus, the existential dilemma is resolved by adopting ritual behaviors, prescribed beliefs and adherence to the "herd" mentality. The next time you watch Cable news, pay close attention to the RW panel members. Try this out by watching different shows on different networks. Note how the neo-conservatives respond in precisely the same manner using precisely the same vocabulary. It will remind you of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers."
These are the people who mutter things like "you can't divine the will of the voter" (James Baker III, Election 2000) while sneaking off to visit Tarot card readers and astrologers. [Nancy Reagan employed Joan Quigley for Ronnie.] But more to the point: What if the Democrats emerged empowered again? What if they posed a real threat to "the plan?"
GOP pundits quickly moblized and spoke with Jihad intensity on every Cable Network. In order to distract voters from the Mondale appointment in Minnesota, the demonizing and denigrating of the Democratic agenda has been ratched up the closer we come to November 5th. The cabal of conservative warriors finds solace in Newt Gingrich (who appeared on "Meet the Press" last Sunday to demonize Mondale), JEB Bush, Karl Rove and their dark ancester, Goebbels.
