In Memoriam F. Kennedy, Jr. Our revels are ended. These our actors, |
I'd like to tell you what I've been thinking about the Death of Camelot: You Can't Go Home Again -- (Thomas Wolfe). I was 14 years old when John F. Kennedy, Sr. was assassinated. I remember 3 year old JFK, Jr. saluting his fallen father as the casket rolled by. As John grew up and I grew older, I became increasingly aware of how the media and the masses projected the aborted Camelot vision onto John, even when it was clear that he was a man of his own generation -- a generation endowed with its own mythos -- a new, raw power calling for its time to mature. I think of John's passing with great grief. Grief for him, Carolyn and Lauren, and a conscious grief which signals the end of my own Camelot. The icons I revered; those who inspired me, fascinated me, and taught me on anima mundi's stage have exited painfully. Tragically. As we approach the eve of 2000, will we claim a new dream? Excalibur awaits. The Lady of the Lake Awaits. Perhaps this time it will be the collective itself who is deemed worthy to pull the sword from the stone. The Astrology of It: It is easy to get confused. There is so much data to consider. Natal charts, progressions, directions, lunar and solar returns, event charts, chart comparisons, and the upcoming eclipses. What's the puzzle piece left out of the picture? The preceding eclipse! Annular Solar Eclipse The Ascendant, Part of Fortune, Chiron and Pluto conjoin Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg's Sun at 5 Sagittarius and Ascendant at 7 Sagittarius. The same conjoin John Jr.'s Natal Sun at 2 Sagittarius and his 4th house cusp. (The house of ancestors and endings. Also the "mantle" we assume when our parents and grandparents pass on). First, Caroline's identity not only has been, but will be, intensely caught up with her brother's. As the last surviving Camelot Kennedy, the immensely private Caroline will re-evaluate her role and deeply search within to integrate what she will share of the Kennedy mantle with her Uncle, Ted Kennedy, the family Patriarch. Pluto with Caroline's Sun in her first house (and on the Ascendant) signifies a tremendous loss coupled with the power of the phoenix to reinvent itself. With John's 4th house impacted by the aforementioned angles, planets, etc., these signatures also represent a tremendous shift for him. A severe loss; an intense reorientation; grappling with ancestral "mind" and character inheritances. But would we predict death? Not if he were my client. (And not for any client!) Also, Plutonic signatures in a chart do not always mean physical death. However, I would have cautioned John to be vigilant. John had a natal Mars-Saturn opposition lying across his 11th and 5th houses, respectively. (Sports/risk taking/romantic love - 5th house. 11th house: love received; and a community bonding for a purpose [Rory's wedding]. Further, John's sense of responsibility (Jupiter, Venus and Saturn in Capricorn in his 4th and 5th houses) found him doing Lauren a favor by flying her to Martha's Vineyard for a fun weekend. John's natal 9th house takes on more importance, as well. It is the 3rd house from his 7th, which represents John's wife's sister. The 9th house is associated with air travel, especially over water). We've already seen the "malefic" manifestations of Mars opposing Saturn in transit all year commencing with the Clinton trial; Mars' 1999 retrograde cycle; and commencement of the war in Kosovo. Both events were key collective undertakings, and foreshadow events of the eclipse of August 11, 1999 where Mars will again oppose Saturn as part of the grand fixed square. On a personal level, Mars in opposition to Saturn can manifest as "driving with the brakes on;" "self-blocking;" "freezing of the reflexes;" "muscle cramps/spasms," etc. Add a Mercury retrograde (now) to the mix and we have faulty timing; inability to think clearly; and self-blocking that can create reflex responses (use of hands in an emergency situation) in a direction opposite the goal. (Steering an aircraft?) What Key Points Did February's Eclipse Hit? 1. Sun and Moon, 27 degrees Aquarius: The eclipse Sun and Moon conjoined John's Moon and Chiron in his 6th house of health, mental agility, and integrity of the body's structure. If you're paying attention right now, you will have already figured out that the eclipse Moon at 27 Aquarius was also a Lunar Return for John. The eclipse opposed his natal Uranus (25 Leo) in his 12th house of self-undoing. Uranus is the planet associated with airplanes and aviation. 2. Eclipse Saturn at 28 Aries fell in John's 8th house of death and trined natal Uranus in the 12th. Eclipse Pluto conjoined John's 4th house cusp, thus activating the three houses of endings: 4, 8, and 12. Saturn, Uranus and Pluto activating chart angles is highly significant of eruptive change. The dispositors: Uranus disposes of the Eclipse Sun and Moon; and the Sun disposes Uranus, thus creating a mutual reception between the Eclipse Sun and Natal Uranus, across John's 6th/12th house axis. Eclipse Mars at 7 Scorpio ¹ disposits Saturn, thus "flavoring" John's natal Mars-Saturn opposition. Eclipse Mars conjoined John's natal Neptune (9 Scorpio) and Mercury (13 Scorpio -- 3rd house), thus dynamically activating John's natal Mercury/Pluto mutual reception ² (Pluto 8 Virgo, house 12). Caroline Kennedy's Chart: I precessed the progressions and directions for both John and Caroline. What I discovered by using the precession feature in Solarfire is that Eclipse/Transiting Mars at 7 Scorpio conjoins Caroline's natal North Node at 10 Scorpio in her 11th house. It also conjoins her progressed and directed Midheaven, falling on the progressed chart's North Node. Counting from Caroline's 3rd house, the house of her siblings, to her natal 11th house, Carolyn's 11th house becomes "long distance journeys of siblings." This represents how Caroline will experience her brother's 9th house love of aviation and ultimately his fateful journey. Caroline's natal Mars at 12 Scorpio, is the degree at which Mars turned retrograde on March 10, 1999. As Mars backtracked to 24 Libra, Mars was within one degree of a conjunction with her natal Jupiter in house 11 (John's representative 9th) at 23 Libra. Jupiter conjoins Spica, the "lucky" fixed star at this degree. One would think Jupiter on Spica a lucky thing, however, Bill Clinton's Jupiter is also in Libra in the same degree, thus indicating that excesses/poor judgment (Jupiter out of control), can lead to severe consequences. Mars with Jupiter is a dramatic push to overshoot the mark by bypassing sound judgment in favor of split second decisions (impetuous Mars). Although John was not a reckless man (Saturn in dignity in Capricorn in his natal 5th), he was committed to pleasing his lover/wife, Carolyn. (Venus and Jupiter in Capricorn, house 4). John's split second decision to fly Lauren to Martha's Vineyard was in deference to his wife's request. As Mars approached 5-6 degrees Scorpio in direct motion over this last week, Caroline Kennedy's 11th house mirrored the coming tragedy. By studying the previous eclipse in light of John's death, it is easy to see how eclipse cycles demonstrate their potent forces in the charts of the famous and in the collective. The timing of events through eclipses, as you can see, may not be immediate. Transits, progressions, and event charts that link up with eclipse degrees are the harbingers of change. As potent as February, 1999's Solar Eclipse was for John Kennedy, Jr., his wife, sister-in-law and the Kennedy family, we can't begin to guess how the next two eclipses (July 28 and August 11) may affect the world stage. Lunations Are Also Important:Lunations before and after eclipses, plus Lunations that precede key events need to be reviewed. July 12, 1999's New Moon at 20 Cancer conjoined John's natal Mars at 18 Cancer in his 11th house, which is the 5th house from the 7th - his wife's pleasures and her ability to take risks. The Vertex, or fated point in the New Moon chart is 17 Virgo, which squares John's part of fortune at 17 Gemini in his 10th house. Mercury at 9 Leo in the New Moon chart is the dispositor for both of these points, and Squares John's natal Neptune (9 Scorpio). Thus, we have more "flavoring" for John's Mercury-Pluto mutual reception. Also, transiting Mars at 2 Scorpio is in a semi-sextile relationship to John's Sagittarius Sun. The semi-sextile can be an irritation; a rub; something lying just beneath consciousness. It's either an opportunity which will bear fruit in the future, or a grind one hopes to endure. Further, Mars in the lunation chart conjoined Carolyn's natal Neptune in her 11th house -- John's representative 9th house -- thus again setting off associations with journeys over water. Points of Interest:As an aside, I was astounded when I heard on MSNBC that on Jul 21 JFK's remains were discovered via remote camera. MSNBC reported that the time was near 2:00 am. I cast a chart for 1:55 am. The Ascendant on that chart is 9 Gemini -- the degree of John's Midheaven. The Part of fortune in the chart is 29 Aquarius in the 9th house of journeys. It opposes John's natal Uranus at 25 Leo in his 12th house. The Bessette Sisters were located at 12:45 pm, Jul 21. The Ascendant on that Chart is 23 Libra, the degree of Caroline Kennedy's natal Jupiter in Libra. Venus in this chart at 3 Virgo quincunxes retrograde Neptune in the 4th house of endings in the chart, and the part of fortune, 7 Aquarius, links to Mars' degree for Jul 22, the proposed burial at sea. Note also that transiting Chiron is 27 Scorpio, which is the Feb. Eclipse degree of the Sun and Moon at 27 Aquarius. Chiron squares this eclipse point. This square and the Venus/Neptune quincunx indicates great stress, fear, and trauma during the final moments of life. The remains of all parties were removed from the sea at 4:30 pm, Jul 21st. The Ascendant for this chart is 7 Sagittarius -- the exact degree of Caroline Kennedy's Ascendant. The part of fortune at 23 Pisces conjoins the 4th house cusp of endings. The Neptune dispositor again speaks of the sea. What is interesting is that the 4th house cusp of the chart set for the Kennedy-Bessette memorial is 1 Capricorn in the 4th, the house of ancestors. Teddy Kennedy, reigning patriarch and last of the Kennedy brothers alive, has an Ascendant of 10 Capricorn. The Sun has moved from Cancer to 0 Leo in this chart, thus signifying the end of one era, and the beginning of another where Teddy steps into the role of King.

The Lady of Shalott On either side the river lie Long fields of barley and of rye, That clothe the wold and meet the sky; And through the field the road run by To many-tower'd Camelot; And up and down the people go, Gazing where the lilies blow Round an island there below, The island of Shalott. Willows whiten, aspens quiver, Little breezes dusk and shiver Through the wave that runs for ever By the island in the river Flowing down to Camelot. Four grey walls, and four grey towers, Overlook a space of flowers, And the silent isle imbowers The Lady of Shalott. Only reapers, reaping early, In among the beared barley Hear a song that echoes cheerly From the river winding clearly; Down to tower'd Camelot; And by the moon the reaper weary, Piling sheaves in uplands airy, Listening, whispers, " 'Tis the fairy The Lady of Shalott." There she weaves by night and day A magic web with colours gay. She has heard a whisper say, A curse is on her if she stay To look down to Camelot. She knows not what the curse may be, And so she weaveth steadily, And little other care hath she, The Lady of Shalott. And moving through a mirror clear That hangs before her all the year, Shadows of the world appear. There she sees the highway near Winding down to Camelot; There the river eddy whirls, And there the surly village churls, And the red cloaks of market girls Pass onward from Shalott. Sometimes a troop of damsels glad, An abbot on an ambling pad, Sometimes a curly shepherd lad, Or long-hair'd page in crimson clad Goes by to tower'd Camelot; And sometimes through the mirror blue The knights come riding two and two. She hath no loyal Knight and true, The Lady of Shalott. But in her web she still delights To weave the mirror's magic sights, For often through the silent nights A funeral, with plumes and lights And music, went to Camelot; Or when the Moon was overhead, Came two young lovers lately wed. "I am half sick of shadows," said The Lady of Shalott. A bow-shot from her bower-eaves, He rode between the barley sheaves, The sun came dazzling thro' the leaves, And flamed upon the brazen greaves Of bold Sir Lancelot. A red-cross knight for ever kneel'd To a lady in his shield, That sparkled on the yellow field, Beside remote Shalott. The gemmy bridle glitter'd free, Like to some branch of stars we see Hung in the golden Galaxy. The bridle bells rang merrily As he rode down to Camelot: And from his blazon'd baldric slung A mighty silver bugle hung, And as he rode his armor rung Beside remote Shalott. All in the blue unclouded weather Thick-jewell'd shone the saddle-leather, The helmet and the helmet-feather Burn'd like one burning flame together, As he rode down to Camelot. As often thro' the purple night, Below the starry clusters bright, Some bearded meteor, burning bright, Moves over still Shalott. His broad clear brow in sunlight glow'd; On burnish'd hooves his war-horse trode; From underneath his helmet flow'd His coal-black curls as on he rode, As he rode down to Camelot. From the bank and from the river He flashed into the crystal mirror, "Tirra lirra," by the river Sang Sir Lancelot. She left the web, she left the loom, She made three paces through the room, She saw the water-lily bloom, She saw the helmet and the plume, She look'd down to Camelot. Out flew the web and floated wide; The mirror crack'd from side to side; "The curse is come upon me," cried The Lady of Shalott. In the stormy east-wind straining, The pale yellow woods were waning, The broad stream in his banks complaining. Heavily the low sky raining Over tower'd Camelot; Down she came and found a boat Beneath a willow left afloat, And around about the prow she wrote The Lady of Shalott. And down the river's dim expanse Like some bold seer in a trance, Seeing all his own mischance -- With a glassy countenance Did she look to Camelot. And at the closing of the day She loosed the chain, and down she lay; The broad stream bore her far away, The Lady of Shalott. Lying, robed in snowy white That loosely flew to left and right -- The leaves upon her falling light -- Thro' the noises of the night, She floated down to Camelot: And as the boat-head wound along The willowy hills and fields among, They heard her singing her last song, The Lady of Shalott. Heard a carol, mournful, holy, Chanted loudly, chanted lowly, Till her blood was frozen slowly, And her eyes were darkened wholly, Turn'd to tower'd Camelot. For ere she reach'd upon the tide The first house by the water-side, Singing in her song she died, The Lady of Shalott. Under tower and balcony, By garden-wall and gallery, A gleaming shape she floated by, Dead-pale between the houses high, Silent into Camelot. Out upon the wharfs they came, Knight and Burgher, Lord and Dame, And around the prow they read her name, The Lady of Shalott. Who is this? And what is here? And in the lighted palace near Died the sound of royal cheer; And they crossed themselves for fear, All the Knights at Camelot; But Lancelot mused a little space He said, "She has a lovely face; God in his mercy lend her grace, The Lady of Shalott."
