Last year's great planetary line-up in Taurus (including the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction at 22 Taurus) slammed headlong into Earth Day's natal Sun, Saturn, Mercury and Venus. The fourth house of the chart, which took the hits, is fundamentally related to the USA's national boundaries, incorporating all 50 states. It is the house of the people's relationship to the land, which is reiterated in the Star Spangled Banner's lyrics: "The land of the free and the home of the brave." It is also related to pride in one's family heritage, political persuasion, tribal and ancestral roots and riches mined from the soil.

Taurus is associated with abundance, including animals, as environmental issues (animal's lives) are caught up with a prudent conservation (Saturn in Taurus) of what we value (Venus, Taurus's ruler). Precious gems, minerals mined from the earth, land management, national parks and nature preserves are also Taurean and Venusian. T-Uranus in Aquarius has been squaring the Taurus point since Y2K, including the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction of May 28, 2000. Presently T-Saturn at 26 Taurus (Caput Algol) is taking its final, but most difficult, Uranus square at the time of this writing. Because agriculture is big business, the profit motive is often at odds with the manner in which a nation legislates protection of its natural resources.

Presently, Neptune, associated with poisons and diseases, squares Earth Day's natal Moon and Saturn. This T-Square formation meets its release point via transiting Neptune just on the second house cusp (income derived from the earth's bounty). The North Node at 10 Pisces is in the second house. Pisces is a clear identifier of Foot (Neptune) & Mouth Disease. The Scorpio Moon equates to public opinion and is a strong significator of those who breed domestic animals for profit.

The major spin (Neptune) around justification for mass slaughter of animal entities is that profits (2nd house) would be substantially reduced by selling animals that had recovered from the disease. Recovered animals produce less milk and weigh less, thus reducing the dollar-for-meat value. The Virgo South Node in the 8th house of death testifies to the eradication of infected animals. Pluto in Virgo, the irrevocable bringer of death due to disease, hovers in the 9th house of agricultural laws which dictate the eradication of animals infected with Foot & Mouth.

The United States has not had an outbreak of Foot & Mouth since 1929, the year of the horrific stock market crash. It is "interesting" that a world livestock epidemic is occurring just as the U.S.'s, Japan's and England's stock markets are tanking. The Uranus square to Saturn in Taurus shatters the status quo, however, I do not think that the square's call for vast reform will be heard until an environmental event, such as a global disaster of unparalleled proportions, forces humanity into it.

Earth Day Ceres, at 3 Aries, took the Aries Ingress hit which also trined its natal Neptune in Sagittarius. T-Mars conjoined N-Neptune when news of the horrific disease just began to make mainstream news. Ceres also squares the part of fortune in the 6th house of farming at 2 Cancer! Transiting Venus's hit to the Aries-Ceres point of the Earth Day chart on February 6th created an explosive T-square (Uranus in Earth Day Libra) that continues to release through the Cancerian part of fortune. The part of fortune draws us back to Earth Day's "domestic harvest" natal Moon. [Read about Earth Day's Progressions Below]

Earth Day Progressed

Progressed Neptune at 29 Scorpio (unstable as it is preparing to change signs and conjoin Earth Day's natal Neptune) will take the opposition from transiting Saturn in Taurus the week of April 20, 2001. At that time, we will see the horrific consequences of Hoof & Mouth Disease in stark relief. 29 Taurus is ALCYONE, the fixed star of great grief. In popular astrological parlance, ALCYONE "gives you something to cry about." Late April will usher in the occasion to grieve the inhumane enslavement of animals as used for profit vis a vis economic "Globalization."

The same planetary relationships mentioned above also relate to CO-2 Emissions, Arctic Drilling, and C. Todd Whitman's (EPA Secretary) "spin" on why it is okay for us to drink Arsenic impregnated water. Unfortunately, such irresponsible "rulings" by the Bush administration won't end anytime soon. Pluto's transit of the 10th house of the progressed Earth Day chart (and Mars's) may signal an outcry for vast reform. However, I wouldn't hold my breath. As it is, we may have little oxygen left to breathe.

Note: Earth Day commenced with a "call" to everyone who participated to begin the celebration with prayer and meditation at the midnight hour. I lived in NYC at the time and attended the rally in Union Square Park.
