Sagittarius shares duality with its polar opposite sign, Gemini. The Archer, ruled by benevolent Jupiter, is either involved with humankind's highest aspirations or chooses to align him/herself with exaggeration and excess. There are two kinds of Sagittarians. The first one is the seeker, world traveler, teacher, pilgrim, judge and preacher. The other is an overeater, drinker, prevaricator, and tyrant. Most Sagittarians lie between these two extremes. One thing about the Archer has to be clear: no Sagittarius feels completely whole unless questing for freedom of thought, word and deed. Sagittarians need a lot of room with which to move. I know a Sagittarian who slaps her foot like a merry horse when she laughs! Roving, roaming, and galloping describe ways the Archer relieves anxiety. They are searching for something. What they most crave is a big bite out of the apple of truth.

As a mutable fire sign, Sagittarius is filled with "shaki," which is Sanskrit for energy. The mutability of the Archer dispenses that energy quite differently from cardinal fire Aries, or fixed fire Leo. There is more angst. Sagittarius follows the depth of regenerative, probing, psychic and sometimes paranoid Scorpio. From overwhelming Pluto (Scorpio's ruler) the jump is to expansive Jupiter. Sometimes called the Santa Claus of the zodiac, Jupiter's function is more ample than the mere dispensing of boons and gifts. Jupiter's violet call is to a destiny of higher mind; higher education; long distance travel, where other cultures reveal the truth of one's own. Expansive Sagittarius must fire the Archer's arrow into the great unknown in hopes of discovering his/her place in the cosmos.

The downside of Sagittarius can manifest itself in dogmatic pride and tyranical attachment to personal beliefs. Lacking it's polar opposite's healing mirror (Mercury in Gemini) the Archer loses sight of the arrow and cannot reconnect to the reason why the probe was launched. With scientific, and often skeptical Mercury balancing Jupiter's tendency to exaggerate, the Archer can learn prudence and balance. He/she can examine beliefs in a non-threatening way, and analyze the foundation of belief systems in order to clean out what does not work.

Sagittarius belongs in wide open spaces of the mind. Restrictions on the quest make the Centaur angry and restless. Burning with the violet light of intuition and intellect, the Archer can evolve into teacher/avatar so long as he/she keeps sight of the golden arrow shot to the highest point.
